About this race
The Merrell Race Tekapo Half Marathon starts and finishes at the Village Green in Lake Tekapo. The route follows paths to Tekapo Springs, crosses the road and joins the Mt John track, climbing steeply through forest and onto tussock to the summit outcrop. Runners then run the summit ridge past the Mt John Observatory and café, cross a stile and reach the Hitching Post before descending a zigzagging path down the mountainside. The course circles the base of Mt John towards the village, passing the footbridge and the Church of the Good Shepherd, then continues through the Regional Park on the Cowan Hill tracks and forest trails. After crossing Lilybank Road and passing through a reserve to the lakeshore, it follows lakeside trails back to the finish. Surfaces are mostly farm road, 4WD track and easy single track, and the profile is undulating with some big hills.
