About this race
The Merrell Race Tekapo 12k starts and finishes at the Village Green in Lake Tekapo. The course follows village paths to Tekapo Springs, crosses the road at the springs car park and joins the Mt John track. It climbs through forest and then onto open tussock, taking the right fork near the top to reach the rocky summit outcrop. Runners continue along the summit, passing below the observatory and café buildings, then turn onto a rocky path, cross a farm stile and reach the Hitching Post. From there a zigzagging path drops down the mountainside before the course loops around the base of Mt John and returns through the Tekapo Springs car park to the village. The surface is mostly easy and moderate single track with a short sealed section. The climb is steep with a lot of walking, and the profile is otherwise flat.
