About this race
The Tarawera Ultra-Trail 102k is a point-to-point race that starts in Kawerau and finishes in Rotorua, linking the two towns through the forests and lakes of the Bay of Plenty. From Kawerau the route heads west into forest and climbs towards the shores of Lake Tarawera, before looping through the Lake Okataina scenic reserve area and then continuing west to Rotorua. Along the way runners pass five lakes, including Lake Tarawera, as well as waterfalls, clear streams and stands of native forest. The terrain is mostly forest trail and track, with two large climbs in the middle section of the race and a long run down toward the lakefront. The finish is in Rotorua at the Village Green on Lakefront Drive, where the race village is based. The race is part of the UTMB World Series and awards Running Stones.
