About this race
The Old Ghost Ultra is an 85 km point-to-point backcountry race along the Old Ghost Road on New Zealand's West Coast. It starts at the northern end of the trail, about 4 km east of Seddonville, and finishes at Lyell Historic Reserve. The first section is easy running before the trail begins a sustained climb to the high point at Heaven's Door on the Lyell Range, with a long stretch high on the tops. Aid stations are at Specimen Point, Stern Hut, Ghost Lake and Lyell Saddle huts. After Ghost Lake the route descends for most of the final 30 km to the finish. The trail is almost entirely dirt and is described as New Zealand's longest continuous single-track, and the course is demanding with long climbs and descents. It is organised by the Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust, which built the trail.
