Run the Runway 5k

Run the Runway is a sunset 5km run and walk held directly on the runway at Tauranga Airport, a surface normally off-limits to the public. Participants gather beforehand at the Classic Flyers Aviation Museum next to the airfield, then make their way onto the tarmac once a mandatory safety briefing has confirmed the runway is closed to aircraft for the evening. The course covers the flat, paved runway, with no traffic, hills or road crossings to contend with, making it accessible to runners and walkers of all abilities. Starting as the sun sets, the event pairs the unusual airfield setting with an entertainment village beforehand featuring food vendors, a bar, live music and family activities. Now in its inaugural year, the fundraiser supports the Aerocool Rescue Helicopter, which provides emergency medical response and search and rescue coverage across the Bay of Plenty region.
