About this race
The Cross Recreation Centre Balclutha Half Marathon, which doubles as the Otago Half Marathon Championships, is a point-to-point event starting out near Clydevale and finishing inside the Cross Recreation Centre in Balclutha, South Otago. The course runs downhill along Clutha Valley Road, following the Clutha River before crossing the iconic Balclutha Bridge and climbing a short hill into town on the approach to the finish. Despite its overall net-downhill profile, organisers and past winners note several sharp rises along the way that keep the race honest, particularly in the closing stages. The route is run entirely on sealed road and is a run-only event, unlike the shorter distances on the day. Finishing inside the recreation centre gives runners a distinctive indoor finish line, adding to the event's reputation as one of South Otago's most established running fixtures, organised annually by Sports Clutha.
